Solskjaer explains why Fred hasn't been playing for Manchester United

Fred will have to be patient for his chance in the Manchester United midfield this season after being told he won't be leaving the club.

The £52million Brazilian was linked with a move to Fiorentina ahead of Monday's transfer deadline for clubs on the continent, having failed to make any of United's three matchday squads in the Premier League so far this season.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expects him to feature regularly this term once the schedule increases for United with the Europa League and Carabao Cup getting underway.

Fred struggled in his first season at Old Trafford following his move from Shakthar Donetsk, but with United failing to strengthen in midfield this summer and losing Ander Herrera on a free transfer, he is likely to get a chance at some point.

He missed a spell of pre-season due to his wedding in Brazil and is now having to bide his time behind Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.

"He’s fine, he’s working hard. At the moment, he’s behind Paul and Nemanja and Scott. That’s the reason he hasn’t been involved," Solskjaer said of his Brazilian midfielder.

"It’s the most difficult period in August to manage a big squad because there is only one game a week and everyone is fit because we’ve just had pre-season and everyone is ready to play.

"September, October, November, December is when injuries come and that’s when you play most of the games, so he will play plenty of football."

United's schedule will increase after the upcoming international break, which is when Fred is likely to find himself involved in the first team.

That packed fixture list means this has been the final week for Solskjaer to spend a block working with his side ahead of a game at the weekend.

"It has been a good week in training, it is the last week that we could really give it a go, give it a real blast because after international weeks we have got mid week games all the way through," he said.
