Solskjaer explains David de Gea selection for Manchester United vs West Ham

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed David de Gea to bounce back to form for Manchester United after he retained faith with the Spaniard for the Old Trafford clash with West Ham.

The Spanish goalkeeper continued his error prone form with a disastrous display against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday, which led to days of speculation that he could be dropped for the crucial fixture with the Hammers.

But Solskjaer has named De Gea ahead of Romero, with the Spaniard making his 403rd appearance for United, and his manager insists he was never close to being swayed that the time had come to drop his No. 1 goalkeeper.

"No, I don’t read the media, I get the questions in the press conference and you know what they're after. David has been through this so many times, he’ll have a good game tonight hopefully," Solskjaer told MUTV.

While De Gea keeps his place Aaron Wan-Bissaka drops to the bench having sustained an injury in Sunday's disappinting defeat to Chelsea, while Nemanja Matic, who started at Wembley, starts having been on the bench for the last Premier League fixture at Crystal Palace.

"Aaron had a little knock against Chelsea, fortunately Timo (Fosu-Mensah) is fit and ready to play, he played at Palace, he has more minutes under his belt. Nemanja has done fantastically lately, we felt this was a game for him," added Solskjaer said.

United will move above Leicester City into the top four with a win tonight ahead of Sunday's trip to the King Power Stadium and a big win would make the Foxes' task even tougher this weekend.

"If we get a result tonight we know that changes the Leicester game, but no matter what’s happening tonight Sunday is going to be a deciding game, we focus on this one and try to get a result," said Solskjaer.
