Solskjaer compares Fred to Manchester United legend Paul Scholes

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that he sees similarities between Manchester United's in-form midfielder Fred and club legend Paul Scholes.

The Brazilian has now started 13 successive games for United in the Premier League and is starting to repay the £52million transfer fee that the Reds paid Shakhtar Donetsk for him in summer 2018.

Fred was pivotal in United's 2-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday evening and Solskjaer was asked by BT Sport pundit Scholes to rate the midfielder's performance.

The Norwegian said: "I think Fred's improved a lot, and maybe two or three months ago people wouldn't have said Burnley away is going to be a game for Fred.

"But he's developed a lot, he's confident and he's a tenacious little midfielder, like you to be fair! A little bit quicker off the ground maybe."

Fred is the beneficiary of United's decision not to replace outgoing central midfielder Ander Herrera in the summer and Paul Pogba's lengthy absence with injury this season.

Many United supporters took to social media after Fred's performance against Burnley to admit they were wrong about the Brazilian.

The Scholes comparisons may be a touch premature given the United legend's incredible trophy haul — 11 league titles, three FA Cups, two Champions Leagues and two League Cups — but Fred is heading in the right direction.
