Soldiers in the north of the UK have been ordered not to eat Greggs pasties in their uniform because it make them "look unprofessional", according to reports.

A document about dress and discipline, circulated around troops from the Royal Dragoon Guards based in North Yorkshire, warned members that “under no circumstances” should they “stand outside Greggs eating a pasty”.

It suggested that the sight of soldiers munching Greggs' signature steak bakes and sausage rolls made the regiment “look unprofessional”, the MailOnline reported.

However, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) played down reports that Greggs products had been banned by the British Army.

A spokeswoman told the Standard: “It was just a memo from a commanding officer on standards expected while in uniform.”

But the document has emerged at a time of increasing concern about overweight troops.

The MoD statement added: “Healthy living and fitness in the armed forces is of vital importance.

"Our personnel are required to pass our challenging fitness tests, and those who do not pass are provided with diet and fitness support, in order to reach and maintain a healthy weight.”

Last month, it emerged nearly 18,000 members of the British armed forces are clinically obese, including 8,662 in the Army.

Some 16 members had even been given liposuction, the figured revealed.
