Soldier 'told no' by traffic warden when he asked for 45 minutes' grace to attend Remembrance event

A soldier in uniform was allegedly told he couldn't have 45 minutes grace when trying to park in Swansea for a remembrance service.

The man was attending the service at Southend Gardens in Mumbles on Sunday morning when he was seen to approach a traffic warden after apparently struggling to pay with coins at the nearby council car park.

It's believed that the soldier didn't have a debit card on him at the time so instead asked the warden if he could park in the Swansea Council-run car park until after the service.

A passerby, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, but did not want to be named, said: "People were having problems as the machine was not taking coins.

"The man was parked in the car park next to the children's playground and was dressed in a uniform and he didn't have a card with him.

"There were two traffic wardens checking the cars.

"He said to the warden 'if I can't pay have you got a 45 minutes grace for when the service has finished?'

"The warden shook his head and said 'no'," he claimed.

"When I walked to the cenotaph someone said that the traffic wardens had been all over there."

Services took place across Wales:

It is not known whether the soldier moved his car after speaking with the warden or if he left it in the car park.

There have been a number of reports in recent weeks of people having problems with car parking machines in Swansea, as a number are out of order.

A spokesman for Swansea Council said: "We have a number of payment machines at Southend, some of which were accepting coin payments on Sunday.

"Information provided on our machines also directs customers to an alternative machine if the one they are using is not accepting coin payments."
