Soldier testing for coronavirus at Glasgow Airport gives insight into army's role in new video

A soldier who has been deployed to conduct coronavirus tests at Glasgow Airport has shared his story and that of his Armed Forces colleagues in a new video.

The British Army footage captures The Royal Regiment of Scotland personnel carrying out the tests, alongside staff from Boots, in a bid to keep the public safe.

Last week, the airport's long-stay car park was transformed into a drive-thru mobile testing facility, with NHS staff and certain key workers only eligible at this stage.

In the video, which shows soldiers conducting the tests alongside staff from Boots pharmacy, 2nd Lieutenant Jamie Bamford, from OC 1 Platoon 2 Scots, explains the army's role at the airport in the battle against covid-19:

"This is something completely new for the solders.

"It seems to be an unusual duty for our soldiers, they seem to have taken to it well. It's a different challenge, something that they've not dealt with before, but they'll deal with it, like they normally do, in a very good fashion.

"The soldiers are prepared to what they're asked to do, they've got all the training and all the PPE they need to do the task properly.

"Coming through the testing stations we have key workers such as prison service and staff from NHS24."

Furthermore, the Lieutenant explained the soldiers will soon hand over the duty to civilians, when they have been adequately trained.

"We plan on being here about a week until the civilian companies can train up their own personnel and take us out as and when they are ready.

"The members of the public seem to be receiving the soldiers well."
