Soldier shot in 'live firing incident' at RAF base in Scotland

One person is thought to have died during a “live-firing” training exercise at an RAF bombing range in Scotland.

Police have sealed off the area following the incident. Unconfirmed reports suggest one person has died and another is injured at the Tain bombing range, 30 miles north of Inverness.

Police Scotland confirmed they were called to the defence facility at about 17:55. Officers were still at the scene four hours later.

An army spokeswoman confirmed that defence officials were dealing with an incident.

She told The Independent: “We are aware of an incident at the Tain base, near Inverness.

”We will release more information as and when it becomes available. It would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this point."

The Tain range is used by tri-service, US Air Force and other Nato air forces for bombing and strafing practice.

It has 18 separate targets suitable for a variety of weapons and different delivery methods.
