Soldier seriously injured in training accident at British Army base

A British soldier has been seriously injured during a training exercise at an Army training area in Cumbria.

The squaddie is believed to have been injured while using a hand grenade, although exact details of the accident have not been released by the Ministry of Defence.

The soldier was rushed to hospital from the Warcop Training Area where they remain and they and their family are being supported by the Army's welfare team.

An Army spokesman said: “On Friday July, 30 an incident took place at the Warcop Training Area which resulted in a soldier sustaining serious injuries.

"As the matter is currently under investigation and it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

According to the Ministry of Defence Warcop Training Area is situated within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is easily accessed from the A66.

It is a live MOD range which is used six and a half days a week predominately by the Infantry Training Centre at Catterick.

It is also used by various other regular and Territorial Army units of the British Army.

The public has a right of way in the "Danger Area" every Sunday afternoon after 1pm.

It is also open to the public for 12 weekends a year - including this coming weekend on Saturday, August 7 and Sunday, August 8.

Back in March a sergeant was killed in a shooting accident on a training area at the Castlemartin range in Pembrokeshire.

Gavin Hillier, of the Welsh Guards, had previously been awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct medal by Prince Charles, the regiment’s Colonel in Chief, in 2019.

He left behind his wife, Karyn, and sons Declan and Connor.
