Soldier killed in Iraq during controlled explosion of Iranian drone named

  • The U.S. military identified Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, from Fayetteville, North Carolina , as the soldier killed Sunday in Iraq .
  • Swinton died during a controlled detonation while disarming an Iranian drone at an air base in Irbil and will be posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Action Badge, and promoted to staff sergeant.
  • A second service member sustained minor injuries in the incident, which is currently under investigation.
  • Swinton's death follows the killing of two other U.S. Army soldiers, 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, in Jordan on Friday, marking the first U.S. troop deaths from direct Iranian fire since the war began.
  • The escalating conflict has led to President Trump facing political pressure to bring the war to a close.
