Sold-out AC/DC show at Wrigley to feature pyrotechnics

Sept. 15--AC/DC will debut at Wrigley Field with a bang Tuesday.

Pyrotechnics will be used for three songs during the sold-out concert, and helicopters will capture aerial shots of the band's performance to create a DVD of the show, said Bennett Lawson, chief of staff for Wrigleyville Ald. Tom Tunney, 44th.

The pyrotechnics, which are slated to be used during the band's introduction video and last two songs of the show, will occur on stage and won't be visible outside the ballpark, Lawson said. To help mitigate noise concerns on a school night, the plan is for the band to wrap up the show at 10 p.m., an hour before Wrigley's 11 p.m. curfew.

"It's probably the hardest rock band (Wrigley has) had there, and it's also the first concert on a school night. ... That's why they're ending a little earlier," Lawson said.

Lawson said he anticipates the helicopters will draw some gripes from Wrigley neighbors. His office received a handful of noise complaints related to the Zac Brown Band concert at the ballpark Friday.

He said the office has already fielded calls about the parking restrictions this week related to the concert. Gates are scheduled to open Tuesday at 5 p.m., with the show beginning at 7 p.m.

The Cubs hotline -- 1-866-427-3869 -- will be active one hour before the concert until two hours after the show.

AC/DC last performed in Chicago in August 2009 at the United Center.

AC/DC's show Tuesday is the band's most expensive U.S. stop on its Rock or Bust World Tour, according to data from ticket search engine SeatGeek.

The average resale ticket price for the AC/DC show at Wrigley is $263, which tops this summer's three other Wrigley Field concerts, SeatGeek analyst Chris Leyden said. The average resale price for a ticket to see the Foo Fighters, who played Aug. 29, was $234; the Zac Brown Band, $140; and Billy Joel, who played Aug. 27, $129.

Only the three "Fare Thee Well" Grateful Dead shows at Soldier Field in July and a three-day Lollapalooza pass topped the cost of the AC/DC concert in the secondary market when comparing all Chicago concerts this summer, Leyden said.

Still, the Chicago ticket is not AC/DC's most expensive ticket this week. The band's stop Sunday in Edmonton, Canada, has a higher average resale ticket price of $427.

About a dozen North American stops are scheduled for the Rock or Bust tour, which is slated to wrap up in December in New Zealand.
