SAN DIEGO _ A few notable streaks ended Saturday for the Padres.
They played the second-ever doubleheader at Petco Park, and the first in 11 years. Clayton Richard surrendered a home run to a left-handed hitter for the first time since 2013. And after going 11 consecutive innings without hitting a ball out of the infield, the Padres finally made the Dodgers' outfielders work.
In the bottom of the ninth, Yasiel Puig made a leaping, futile attempt. A drive by Yangervis Solarte cleared the right-field wall, and the Padres celebrated a 6-5 victory in the first of the day's two contests.
Solarte's first career walk-off homer ended a game that had been tied on three separate occasions, including the top of the ninth, when Brad Hand hung a 1-2 slider. A rare mistake by the Padres' top reliever resulted in a two-run, pinch-hit homer for Justin Turner.
A half-inning later, Hand and his teammates thronged around home plate, mobbing the hero of the afternoon.
"That's a good feeling," said Solarte, who turned on an 0-1 fastball from Pedro Baez. "I think when Turner got a homer, I said, 'Stay focused. Maybe we'll get a walk-off,' and that happened. Wow. That's good."
Solarte's hit was one of seven for the Padres, supplementing a season-high eight walks. The output represented a stark contrast to Friday's shutout loss, in which San Diego managed two infield singles, didn't draw a walk and didn't hit a ball out of the infield.
"We had good at-bats today, better than we had yesterday," Padres manager Andy Green said. "A lot of walks in there. A lot of hard contact. A lot of balls at the wall that got caught."
Manuel Margot logged his first career three-walk performance, while Wil Myers and Cory Spangenberg each had two hits and a walk. With a double and a triple, Myers recorded his first multi-extra-base-hit game since Aug. 5.
"When I've been on deck, I've been kind of pressing, trying to find timing," said Myers, who has scuffled for much of the season. "Today, I just stood on deck and watched and just went up there and hit. I just thought today I'll stand on deck and not think about anything. Kind of worked a little bit."
