Solar eclipse: Here's when, where and how you can see the new moon phenomenon in skies nationwide

A partial solar eclipse will grace Irish skies next week when the Moon will cover nearly 15% of the Sun.

This rare event will be a spectacular sight as the moon moves across part of the sun, but it will only be visible for a matter of hours.

Sky gazers wishing to catch it are being warned to use the appropriate instruments to watch the partial solar eclipse and not to look at the sun directly.

Looking at the sun with the naked eye - even when a part of it is covered - can cause serious damage to the eyes.

The sun will look like it has had a chunk removed with observers in western Siberia, in Russia, being blessed with the best view of the solar event.

Irish viewers will still be able to witness it beginning on Tuesday, October 25 at 10:06 am and ending at 11:40am the same day.

According to timeanddate.com, it will be at its maximum visibility at 10:52am.

The best way to see the eclipse, according to the National Safety Council, is through special-purpose solar filters.

It says: “The only safe way to look directly at the sun is through special-purpose solar filters, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

“These special filters are used in eclipse glasses and hand-held solar viewers.

“Eclipse glasses are available for purchase at big-box stores, electronics supply outlets and online.”
