Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has advised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to seek assurances that the club will be busy in the transfer market before signing a new deal.
The Gabonese striker has had yet another prolific season at the Emirates, and his 19 Premier League goals make him the second top scorer in the division, behind only Leicester's Jamie Vardy.
The club are desperate for him to sign a new contract, with his current deal expiring in June 2021, but as of yet Aubameyang has yet to decide on his future.
Speaking to Stadium Astro, Campbell urged the 31-year-old to make sure the club are willing to spend big before committing his long-term future to the Gunners, and thinks he needs to have a serious conversation with manager Mikel Arteta.
"He’s got to settle down and have a conversation with the manager and he needs to have a clear understanding of what they’re looking to spend, who they’re trying to get in," Campbell said.
"It’s going to come down to trust, can he trust the club to say, 'right we are looking for x, y and z, we’re going to bring two or three players in' and I think they’ll push us on to really challenge for the top four, or really you never know [with] the Premiership.
"He needs to sit down with his people and have a serious conversation about where the club is going in the next two or three years, because he hasn’t got five years, six years to say let’s see how it goes, he needs almost instant success now."
Arsenal have been linked with the likes of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid and Newcastle's Allan Saint-Maximin recently, and Arteta appears keen to strengthen his squad ahead of next season as well as convincing Aubameyang to stay put.
