Sol Campbell issues verdict on Virgil van Dijk mistake for Alexandre Lacazette goal vs Liverpool

Arsenal legend Sol Campbell believes that Reiss Nelson's challenge on Virgil van Dijk prior to the defender's mistake that allowed the Gunners to equalise against Liverpool was not a foul.

Mikel Arteta's side trailed due to Sadio Mane's opener but Van Dijk's poor pass after he was put under pressure by Nelson allowed Alexandre Lacazette to round Alisson before levelling the scores.

Nelson would then go on to score himself, with Alisson this time the man guilty of an error, but Liverpool were not too happy with the build-up to the first effort.

Van Dijk, rather optimistically, appealed for a foul but saw his pleas waved away by referee Martin Atkinson and Campbell is confident it was the right call.

“They’ve got control of the game - it’s nice and easy - sometimes it’s just a lapse of concentration. Nelson just puts a little bit of pressure on him and Lacazette pounces, rounds the ‘keeper and tucks it away," he told Sky Sports at half-time.

"No, no foul, just pressure. Lacazette does really well. Great touch and he slots it in. Perfect.”

The match against the Premier League champions continued a tough run of fixtures for Arsenal, who have played Sheffield United, Wolves, Leicester City and Tottenham, with Manchester City up next in the FA Cup semi-final.
