Sol Campbell: Former Arsenal defender named as new Southend United manager on three-year deal

Former Arsenal and Tottenham defender Sol Campbell has been appointed as the new manager of League One outfit Southend United.

Campbell had been exploring his next move in management after leaving Macclesfield Town just three games into the season.

But the 45-year-old has agreed to take over at Roots Hall on a contract until 2022.

Former Portsmouth team-mate Hermann Hreidarsson and ex-Manchester United striker Andy Cole will form part of his coaching team.

Southend have been struggling in League One this season and are currently in 23rd with just one victory all season.

The Shrimpers looked to set to appoint Henrik Larsson but a deal failed to materialise after Kevin Bond was sacked in September.
