Sol Campbell claims coronavirus 'man made and designed to kill certain people'

Sol Campbell has been criticised for suggesting coronavirus is a man-made disease.

The former Arsenal and England defender continued to say he thought Covid-19 may have been designed to target certain people.

The global Coronavirus pandemic has led to England being the most affected nation in Europe in terms of deaths.

But the Southend manager tweeted a picture of national statistics that show the possibility of heightened risk in black people and women.

Campbell said: “Was this virus a natural mistake or a designed mistake...?

“I wonder does this virus deliberately attacks a certain blood type….?”

His views have been condemned on social media just days before Boris Johnson addresses the nation amid suggestions he will ease the country's lockdown.

The football season came to a halt in mid-March after the government banned large gatherings.

Project Restart is aiming to get the Premier League back up and running with the title not officially awarded and plenty to battle for at the bottom of the table.

But Leagues One and Two have been warned about the possibility of their season not drawing to a conclusion.

That would effectively seal the fate of Campbell's Southend who are 16 points adrift of AFC Wimbledon in 20th and with just nine games to save themselves.

But the two-time Premier League winner is adamant that safety must be the primary concern.

“I think safety has to come before anything else,” said Campbell.

“I know other countries are looking to come back and Germany are close to playing again but their numbers have been lower than ours.

“I don’t think you can consider bringing back football here until it’s safe to do so but we have to be ready for every possible outcome.

“I’m not sure what’s going to happen or what the authorities will decide to do but we have to be flexible in our thinking so we’re ready to go again whenever that may be.”
