Sol Campbell appointed new manager at League Two side Maccesfield

Former Arsenal and England defender Sol Campbell has been appointed the new manager of Macclesfield Town.

The 44-year-old has signed an 18-month contract with the Cheshire club, who returned to the Football League last season but find themselves moored at the bottom of League Two having won just two games this season.

Campbell will succeed Mark Yates, who was sacked on October 8, and was handed the job ahead of former manager John Askey, who had taken the Silkmen back into the Football League last season but subsequently left for and was sacked by League One side Shrewsbury Town.

Campbell has long professed his desire to find a way into management and recently worked with the England Under-21 squad as part of an FA initiative to offer BAME coaches greater experience working in the national team setup.

In his 19 year playing career Campbell won two Premier League titles, all with Arsenal, who he left local rivals Tottenham for in controversial circumstances in the summer of 2002.

Campbell won three FA Cups, leading Portsmouth to their first major silverware since 1950 in 2008, and 73 England caps.
