Sol Bamba moved to tears by Hibs support as defender speaks out after cancer diagnosis

Former Hibs defender Sol Bamba has been overwhelmed by the support he has received after his cancer diagnosis.

Cardiff City announced last week that the 36-year-old is battling Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

The Bluebirds squad donned t-shirts with Bamba’s name and number for their Championship clash against Norwich.

The Easter Road side were one of the many clubs to rally behind Bamba following the news.

And the ex-Hibee says the support from everyone moved him to tears.

Bamba said: “The reaction was huge to me and I need to admit, it did make me emotional. I cried.

“The support from everyone involved in football - from all around the world - has been incredible. There have been messages of support for me and my family and I want to thank them for giving me the strength to try to beat this.”

Bamba is determined to defeat his illness and reach the top as a manager some day as he looks to complete his coaching badges with his time away from football.

He told Sky Sports: “I have got time on my hands on good days and I try to keep that routine of studying the game.

"I am still doing my coaching badges and this has actually given me more time to focus on that.

“I have always been very passionate about that and, coming towards the end of my career, I am getting more and more involved.

“I was fortunate to be at a club who have given me the opportunity to take sessions with the U23 side and sometimes the first-team and I want to learn as much as I can.

“Hopefully, one day I will be a manager and I want to go as high as I can.

“When I was a player, I was always ambitious and wanted to play at the highest level and was fortunate enough to do that. I will be exactly the same as a manager."
