Sokratis outlines Arsenal's VAR issues after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang red card vs Palace

Sokratis has insisted that VAR has had more of a negative impact on Arsenal than a positive one since its arrival in the Premier League this season.

The Greek centre-back has been victim of the technology twice already this season, when his potential winners were ruled out against Tottenham and in the reverse fixture against Crystal Palace in October.

At Selhurst Park, it was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who was dealt a blow by VAR when his yellow card turned red after review after a late challenge on Max Meyer.

"I’ve said already that VAR is there to help the referees. I didn’t see the action," Sokratis said following the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

"I think this year we are unlucky because the VAR in three or four games can be better for us. It’s not about the game today, but about the game at home against Palace, Sheffield United. But in the end it’s not something that now I criticise the VAR. I think VAR is good because it’s there to help the referees. But the VAR like this we are unlucky.

"Of course when you lose the game from the VAR, sometimes you are disappointed. But I am not the special man who can say if the VAR is good or not. I think the VAR is there to help the referees, but it’s there also to use in a good way.

"It’s the first year that VAR is in England. Of course it will improve, everybody expects it will improve in the years. We have to be respectful."

Aubameyang's sending off meant Arsenal had to play with 10 men for the final 23 minutes of the game. Surprisingly, in this period they had chances as good as Palace to win the game. The best came when Nicolas Pepe rattled the post from the edge of the box but Alexandre Lacazette wasn't able to bundle the rebound home.

The Gunners' best period of play came in the first half, however. David Luiz and Granit Xhaka were connecting well to set Sead Kolasinac and Aubameyang free down the left as Lucas Torreira and Ainsley Maitland-Niles did a superb job keeping Wilfried Zaha quiet.

Failing to fully capitalise on that first half pressure, Arsenal stay 10th, six points off Sheffield United, but Sokratis and Arsenal are looking to build on their strong start.

"(We started) the first half very good. We had the possession, we know exactly what we have to do," the centre-back added.

"Of course after 20 minutes we change a little bit. The pressing they did I think was more aggressive, it was more difficult until we understand what we had to do. We react good, but second half we had to show more in the first 10 or 15 minutes and improve.

"At the end I think the point is not bad because with a red card, in football today with 10 players is very difficult. But if we watch all the game, we are disappointed because I think that we play much better, especially the first 35 minutes when we played really good, we did what the manager asked from us and what we’d worked on the last few days.

"We switched off for the first 10 minutes of the second half and the final five minutes of the first half. Of course we took also an unlucky goal because until this moment I think they’d had maybe one shot. We took an unlucky red card and after it was difficult. We had to fight more, to show more spirit and to give everything. In the end, one point I think we are not happy with, but it’s not also the worst. "
