Former Lebanese deputy and a main figure in the March 14 alliance Fares Soeid has revealed plans to launch a new political movement to end the Iranian tutelage over Lebanon to properly implement the Constitution, protect coexistence and respect international decisions, particularly UNSC Resolutions 1559 and 1701.
In remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Soeid said the new movement would include an array of political figures and intellectuals.
He said the current political class and most figures who won the last parliamentary elections cannot guarantee the protection of Lebanon on the basis of coexistence.
“Each political party is concerned about the problems of its own group, isolated from the woes of other parties: There are Sunni, Shiite, Christian and Druze political parties in the absence of any Lebanese national force,” he said.
Soeid said there are efforts to produce a national platform that represents the Lebanese away from sectarian considerations.
He accused Iran of trying to seize the Lebanese state. “Today, we are building a state based on Iran’s conditions and not based on the Constitution that is the result of the Taef Agreement.”
Soaid failed to reveal the names of his movement’s members, but said that those figures plan to “lift the Iranian tutelage over Lebanon and to stay attached to coexistence by respecting the Lebanese Constitution and the Taef Accord.”
“Currently the ruling party is Hezbollah,” he said. “But our intention is for the Lebanese citizen, no matter what his sect is, to be distinguished.”
The new movement, which he plans to launch end of September, will not include the parties that were represented in the March 14 alliance.
It will show to the Lebanese that the country is not run by a group of politicians who only seek to reach power, said Soaid.
The movement will be a reflection of the country's elite and personalities who are the true representatives of the people, he added.
