Sock recovered at speed camera arson scene linked to accused man, court hears

The Keswick speed camera was set alight twice, the court was told.

A sock matching the one found soaked in accelerant at the scene of a burnt speed camera led to the arrest of the alleged arsonist, the Adelaide Magistrates Court has heard.

Russell Terrence Weribone, 40, was charged with two counts of arson after the speed camera at the intersection of Anzac Highway and Greenhill Road at Keswick was twice set alight yesterday morning.

Prosecutors alleged Mr Weribone set fire to the speed camera using a sock soaked in accelerant about 12:20am, and returned to the scene about 3:45am to try again.

In opposing the man's release on bail, the police prosecutor told the court Mr Weribone was found nearby and subsequently arrested.

"He was located close by in a vehicle matching the description and registration seen to leave the fire and with a sock matching that of the one soaked in accelerant," she said.

The prosecutor said she was opposed to Mr Weribone's release from custody because the accused had been released on bail just three hours before the speed camera was set alight.

"We believe he will continue to offend, your honour," she said.

Mr Weribone's lawyer told the court his client was a self-employed electrician and should be released from custody because he needed to work.

Magistrate Simon Smart granted his release on bail on the condition that he adheres to a curfew, prohibiting him from leaving his Reynella home between 10pm and 6am.
