Social workers 'damned if they do and damned if they don't' as vital service eroded

Social workers really are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”.

For decades, this vital frontline service has been eroded through lack of funding from the Scottish Government and local authorities.

Social workers toil long hours and are under enormous pressure to make tough decisions in the face of complex cases.

Most enter the profession because they genuinely want to make a difference.

But lack of funding and resources has led to disillusionment and many leave the service in the early stages of their career.

Others are forced to move on because their mental health can’t withstand the stress and anxiety.

Scotland’s newly elected Government must give this vital service the support it merits or it will break under the pressure.

It should be no surprise social workers in Argyll and Bute are now threatening strike action over “derisory” pay for emergency out-of-hours cover.

After deductions, some take home about a fiver for the onerous task of being on standby to help men, women and children in trouble.

This is an insult to dedicated, professional people who work excessive unpaid hours because they feel duty- bound to help.

They have had enough of their goodwill being exploited and unions Unite and Unison have joined forces to make these vital frontline workers heard.

The pressure will only increase for Scotland’s social services departments in the aftermath of Covid and it is time social workers were listened to.

If we don’t want more to quit or resort to industrial action, they must be given the pay and recognition they deserve.
