Social welfare update: Revenue responds as customers on Pandemic Unemployment Payment fume over online delays

People trying to access their end-of-year Revenue statement – including many on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment – have been left furious after the website slowed to a snail's pace in recent days.

The Government body is pleading with the public to be patient amid widespread online delays, RTE News reports.

Declan Rigney, an official who works with Revenue's Personal Taxes Division, said the website slowdown was caused by the flood of people trying to get a look at the tax bill they face after receiving Covid-19 supports this year.

He said that people should remember that they can access the information over the weekend or next week if they can't view it today.

Many people on both the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme and the Pandemic Unemployment Payment will be hit with a hefty bill – though they don't have to repay it this year.

Over 400,000 people will have to make repayments at some point to the Government after the pandemic plunged hundreds of thousands into unemployment.

On Twitter, Revenue admitted to "intermittent issues" with its online services.

"Some customers can access services without any problem," the office added in the tweet.

"However, for some customers performance is slow and for others the service is unavailable. Our technical teams are currently working to resolve the issues."

Many more people have started availing of pandemic wage supports once again in recent weeks amid a third national lockdown.

The Government opted to impose strict new measures after case numbers rocketed up over the Christmas period.

Today, the Department of Health reported 3,231 new infections, with another 60 people tragically dying as a result of the virus.

In response, The Chief Medical Officer tonight issued a stern warning to the public this evening, warning "too many" people are still flouting Covid-19 regulations.

In a series of stinging comments, Dr Tony Holohan told the country that improvements in case numbers "are not happening fast enough", adding that a "significant percentage" of daily cases will lead directly to more deaths.
