Social welfare: The rules for Irish people on PUP who want to travel abroad this summer

Thousands of people the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) were given until yesterday to confirm their eligibility to receive the social welfare benefit.

The Department of Social Protection warned that if recipients did not do so by yesterday's deadline, they risked having their payment stopped.

Latest figures show that the number of claimants for the Covid-19 pandemic related payment dropped below 200,000 for the first time.

There were just over 192,000 people in receipt of the PUP this week, the lowest point since the scheme was first introduced in March 2020.

It comes as international travel resumed from Ireland ten days ago, with thousands of Irish holidaymakers jetting abroad to sunny European destinations over the past week.

While many people will be keen to go on staycations this summer, others will be lining up at airport gates to head to Spain and Portugal.

Last summer, there was some confusion over whether people on the PUP would be allowed to go on trips to sunnier climes abroad.

It emerged last July that recipients of the PUP and Jobseekers' Allowance were being stripped of their payments for travelling outside Ireland.

However, the Government was subsequently forced to make a U-turn and permit people claiming social welfare to visit countries on Ireland's 'Green List'.

The Department of Social Protection has since provided further clarity on the rules that will apply this year.

A spokesperson told the Irish Mirror that the Department's position on whether PUP recipients can go on foreign holidays is the same as last year.

This means that claimants should be allowed to go abroad for up to two weeks in total in the calendar year.

However, the individual must notify the Department in advance of travelling.

Contrary to some advice online, PUP recipients do not need to tell inspectors whether they are going on holidays within Ireland.
