Social welfare Ireland payment update on huge change ahead of May Bank Holiday

The May Bank Holiday weekend will see some changes to the social welfare payment this week.

Because of the public holiday on May 3, all banks and post offices will be closed meaning payments will be fast tracked.

Welfare payments that were due on Monday will now be paid on Friday 30 April.

Payments via Post Office for May 3 will be available for collection on April 30 but payments for Tuesday May 4 will remain the same.

Those receiving payments into bank accounts or credit unions will also get an earlier than expected payment on Friday 30 April.

Child Benefit is due on Tuesday May 4 and will remain as scheduled no matter what the payment method.

The news comes as Government ministers are planning to slash PUP payments over the summer.

But People Before Profit (PBP) want a guarantee the PUP will be paid for as long as people are out of work because of Covid.

People Before Profit TD, Richard Boyd Barrett has proposed continuing the full payments of the support, €350 a week, until at least Christmas.

Minister for Public Expenditure, Michael McGrath, gave a clear indication that the Government is moving to cut the PUP sometime after the end of June, admitting they would be “changed” after that.

As well as this, many people on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment could be missing out on hundreds of euro in social welfare payments, an expert has revealed.

Mary Watter, Regional Manager for the North Dublin Citizens Information Service, said that many who are left out of work due to Covid-19 automatically turn to the PUP - even if it isn't the best choice for them.

She explained that under certain circumstances you could be earning well over €400 a week on Jobseeker's Payment or Jobseeker's Allowance instead.

Mary told Dublin Live: "So for example, say someone loses their job now and they apply for the PUP payment. They may think that because it's the one in the media, it's the right payment for them.

"But if someone loses their job and they have been the sole earner earning, say, €400 a week. The PUP payment is €350, but if their partner is not working and they have two children, actually Jobseeker's Payment or Jobseeker's Allowance would give them a greater income per week.

"I don't think people realise that sometimes there's more than one option and you can take the one that's better to you."
