Social welfare Ireland: Jobseeker's payment collection returning to the post office

Jobseeker payment claimants will be returning to their local post office to claim the social welfare payment.

The return will initially apply only to new jobseekers claimants before expanding to others in the months ahead.

People who were receiving jobseeker benefits were allowed to have the weekly payment paid straight into their bank account when the Covid-19 pandemic struck to reduce the spread of the virus.

It is hoped the move back to the post office will bring increased footfall, as well as combat social welfare fraud, according to Social Protection Minster Heather Humphreys.

"I'm acutely conscious of the challenges that are facing the post office network," Minister Humphreys said today.

"That’s why I’m delighted to announce the return of jobseeker payments to post offices, reflecting the arrangements that were in place pre-Pandemic.

"The requirement to physically visit your local post office in order to collect your jobseeker payment will apply initially to new claims, beginning next month.

"But over the coming months, my department will work to extend this requirement to other jobseeker claims."

Irish Postmasters Union President Sean Martin believes bringing people back out will have a positive knock-on effect for businesses in local areas.

He said: "Over 35,000 people are employed in small businesses supported by LEO offices around the country.

"These businesses depend on us for essential services. A thriving post office is a bell weather for the sustainability of the wider community."
