Social welfare Ireland: Exact dates college students will receive double payments ahead of Christmas

College students availing of the Student Universal Support Ireland grant are set to receive a welcome double payment next month, just in time for Christmas.

Around 50,000 students will receive between €56 to €679 depending on the relevant rate they are entitled to. As well as this, college students who paid the full €3,000 student contribution are set to receive a €1,000 refund from the college they attend over the coming weeks.

In Budget 2023, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science budget allocation is €3.2 billion. Here are all the exact dates of the once off payments coming in the next few weeks for college students:

Double SUSI maintenance grant on December 16

A double SUSI maintenance grant payment will be paid 16 December 2022 . Those who are eligible for this grant include PLC, undergraduate and postgraduate students getting the Special Rate of Grant.

For some students, this will mean an additional €679 before the end of the year.

Student contribution reduction payment reduced by €1,000 on December 16

The student contribution fee is being reduced by €1,000 on December 16 for undergraduate students who are eligible for free fees. Students on the 50% student contribution rate will get a reduction of €500 in their contribution rate.

Postgraduate students SUSI grant: €1,000 on December 15

Students who qualify for the postgraduate SUSI fee contribution grant will get a once-off increase of €1,000 on December 15. This is an increase from €3,500 to €4,500 and will be a welcome boost for students in this area of study.

PhD students payment: €500 on December 16

PhD students getting Science Foundation Ireland or Irish Research Council awards will get a payment of €500 on December 16, 2022. The stipend given to most doctoral researchers in higher education is a standard rate of €18,500.

There are about 4,000 research students in receipt of externally funded stipends from the exchequer and 2,000 more who are internally funded through the budgets of individual universities.

In addition, students getting the SUSI maintenance grant will get an increase of either 10% or 14% in their grant depending on their maintenance grant band from January 2023. A further €8 million has been allocated to the Student Assistance Fund for the 2022/23 academic year.

Several new measures will also come into effect in January, like the income threshold for the 50% student contribution grant will increase from €55,240 to €62,000 per year (from 1 September 2023). Meanwhile, the student contribution will be reduced by €500 for families earning between €62,000 and €100,000 (from 1 September 2023).

The Postgraduate SUSI fee grant will also increase by €500.
