Social Welfare Ireland: All the payments you can claim to ease back to school burden

Back to school season is here and with the cost of living crisis continuing to spiral, many families will be feeling the strain that comes along with trying to afford all the items needed to return to education.

With the summer holidays coming to an end, it’s an expensive time to send the kids back to school from buying new uniforms to school books.

But luckily, there are some social welfare benefits that you didn't know about that you can claim to help ends meet.

So here's four payments you could be eligible for:

Back To School Allowance

This clothing and footwear allowance aims at helping families with the finances that come along with children going back to school.

The payment consists of:

  • €260 for each eligible child aged 4-11 on or before 30 September 2022

  • €385 for each eligible child aged 12-22 on or before 30 September 2022

Applications are open until September 30 and you can apply here .

Working Family Payment

The WFP supports people who are on low pay. It is a weekly tax-free payment for employees with children.

You must have a child who you support financially, they must be under 18 (or between 18 and 22 if they are in full-time day education. You can check it out here .

One Parent Family Payment

The OFP is for men and women under 66 who are raising children alone. You must not have the support of a partner and have at least one child under seven years old.

You can work and get OFP but your income must be below a certain amount. Check it out here .

Back to Work Family Dividend

The BTWFD aims to help families move from social welfare into employment. It financially supports those with children who are in or take up employment or self-employment and as a result stop claiming a jobseeker's payment or a one-parent family payment.
