Social welfare: First big change in PUP just weeks away as people get back to work

The government has announced the key dates regarding the Pandemic Unemployment Payment.

The social welfare payment was brought in at the beginning of the pandemic for employees and self-employed people who have lost their jobs due to the public health emergency.

The government decided last week to extend the payment beyond June 30 until September 7.

Key dates regarding the Pandemic Unemployment Payment include:

July 1

The scheme will close to new applicants on July 1 in recognition that there should be no new job lay-offs directly attributed to public health restrictions as the country continues to reopen.

The current weekly rate of payment will be gradually reduced over three phases by €50 each time.

September 7

The first phase of reducing the payment by €50 will come into place on September 7, provided that the country continues its reopening.

November 16

This marks the second phases and will see a further reduction of €50 from the PUP payment.

February 8

The final phases of the €50 reductions will come into effect on February 8.

Students claims for the PUP have been extended until the start of the academic college year, with the final payment given on September 7.

An assistance fund of €10,000 million has been set up to provide supports for the forthcoming academic year for students who COVID has impacted.

Jobseekers’ and other social welfare income supports will continue to be available to anyone who qualifies.

Any person whose social welfare payments prove more beneficial than the recalibrated PUP payment is entitled to receive the more beneficial payment.

The enhanced COVID-19 illness payment will remain in place, and special arrangements put in place to provide enhanced access to rent supplement will remain in place until the end of the year.

The special Enterprise Support Grant of €1,000 for self-employed people returning to work will be continued.
