Social networking site Bebo is making a comeback

Forget TikTok dances and Snapchat dog filters, Bebo is making a comeback.

The social networking site was one of the first of its kind, connecting friends around the globe.

After disappearing in the early 2010, now it looks like Bebo is coming back, and soon.

According to its website, Bebo.com is 'coming soon', listing February 2021 as the date of its relaunch, DevonLive reports.

Bebo predates Facebook - it launched in 2005 and was bought out by AOL in 2008, but Mark Zuckerberg's site seemed to dominate the social sphere, and Bebo faded into the internet's past.

The website says: "Bebo is coming back in February 2021 as a brand new social network.

"We are currently in private beta. If you’ve been invited please enter the password below.”

Bebo users loved the whiteboard doodles, quizzes and 'skins' that they could use to personalise their page. Sadly even if you remember your old Bebo password, you won't be able to recover all of your old photos and data.

The website states: "Please note: all the old data and photos were lost many years ago and are not recoverable. Sorry."

Bebo was created in 2005 by Michael and Xochi Birch, a husband and wife team.

At one point, it was the most popular social networking site in the UK and Ireland, eclipsing MySpace.

But as time went on, more users migrated to Facebook and fell out of love with Bebo.

By 2010, buyer AOL said it was to close the site unless it found a buyer. The site fell into the hands of an investment firm and Bebo was forgotten.

It did have a few attempts to make it back into the hearts of web users.

The original owners bought back the brand and attempted to reignite interest with a built-in messaging app called Blab.

The owners went on to use the brand to create a streaming software, which was an all-in-one app that let gamers stream themselves playing directly to streaming site Twitch. Amazon-owned Twitch bought Bebo by 2019 and things have been quiet ever since.
