Social media star Joel Mawhinney to bring magic to life with new show airing tonight

Mentalist and rising social media star Joel Mawhinney’s talent for trickery will be showcased in a new three-part series Life Is Magic, starting tonight on BBC One Northern Ireland.

The 23 year old from Bangor, Co Down, has won over millions of social media followers through his incredible sleight of hand card tricks, dazzling mind-reading abilities and jawdropping stunts.

In this, his first TV series, Joel sets out to bring a touch of magic to three different parties; a school formal, a transfer test party and a baby gender reveal party.

Before each of the big events, he gets to know the party organisers to learn more about their personal stories and why they’ve come to him for help to make their event extra special.

From predicting personal details no-one else could know, to transforming and transporting objects into the most unlikely places, Joel manages to make each event memorable and magical.

Speaking ahead of the show which airs on BBC tonight, Joel told us: "I’ve been doing magic now for 17 years, almost all of my life. When I first picked up those playing cards, never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be sharing my magic with people all over the world.  Life Is Magic has been a dream come true for me and I can’t wait to see what people think!

“I’m so excited to bring my magic to TV. For the last couple of years I’ve been creating magic for social media, but the long form nature of TV meant that I could really interact with our amazing guests and blow their minds in brand new ways!”

Life is Magic will also be shown weekly, beginning on Monday 5 October at 7.35pm on BBC One Northern Ireland.

The full series will be available on the BBC iPlayer from Monday 5 October at 8pm (after the first episode).
