Social media reacts to Leo Varadkar's final interview as Taoiseach on RTE's Prime Time

Leo Varadkar spoke to RTE's Prime Time last night in what could be his final interview as Taoiseach - and it provoked a big reaction on social media.

The Taoiseach revealed that Ireland could introduce localised lockdowns to prevent the spread of Covid-19 if a second wave hits.

While the Fine Gael leader also defended his use of a quote from the movie Mean Girls as he hit back at "snobbish" criticism.

He told host David McCullagh: "I think any quote is appropriate if it’s appropriate in its context, whether it was written in a movie or by a poet.

“It was in the context of our emissions as a country and I know that some people may be snobbish about those things, that a quote from a movie is different to a quote from a poet or a great author… but I don’t see it that way."

And speaking on the possibility of local lockdowns, he said: “I certainly don’t want the country to go into lockdown either.

“But if it is necessary to contain the virus in particular place or in a particular area, that is what we may need to do and I think that if that was necessary.

"People would understand that, because the alternative would be to let the virus spread out of that area and then we could potentially end up in a national lockdown again."

It comes as he left the door open for ditching the 14 day quarantine rule in place for all travellers coming into the country from as early as next week.

This would open the skies for travel in and out of the country.

He said this could be done through the “air bridges” idea where countries that have equally low coronavirus infection rates can mutually agree travel between them.

But he said that we have to be careful in how we do this because of the very real danger of importing the virus again.

And the big interview provoked a lot of reaction on social media, with users addressing everything from lockdowns and Government formation, to the Mean Girls controversy.

Here is the best of the reaction:
