And RTE's heart-wrenching documentary provoked a huge reaction on social media, as viewers paid tribute to the selflessness and bravery of a "phenomenal woman".

Journalist Susan Keogh wrote: "The scene between Laura Brennan & her Dad in their kitchen would bloody break your heart.

"I’ve said this before but Laura did more for women’s healthcare in this country in her too short life than most people will in a lifetime. A uniquely wonderful woman."

Another added she was "lost for words" following the film, saying Laura was a "life gifting marvel for thousands of young women".

Health Minister Simon Harris was among those to pay tribute, claiming the 26-year-old's advocacy will "save countless lives".

He wrote: "Honoured to have known Laura Brennan - always have been proud of her & her work. Even more grateful tonight.

"An incredible woman whose advocacy will save countless lives.

"Laura, we will not let you down. Working together, we will eradicate this awful disease."
