Social media reacts to controversial Kirkgate Market entrance design by Yorkshire artist

A plan to breathe life into one of the main entrances to Kirkgate Market has been slammed by LeedsLive readers as 'hideous'.

Leeds City Council have approved a design by an award-winning Yorkshire artist to revamp the New York Street entrance with a 3D geometric tunnel.

The bold and colourful design was revealed today but it has not gone down too well with some, who thought it was not in keeping with the rest of the market.

Jade Marie Dunhill commented: "Looks ridiculous! It's a market not a soft play centre ffs, already enough kids running around the market causing havoc, are you trying to lure the younger ones in too?"

Jenny Stevens added: "Did I sleep for a month and wake up on 1st April?"

Gillian Swalwell said: "Hideous! The market is a beautiful historical building in an area of tasteful rejuvenation. This is looks like a LEGO play house ands it's just wrong."

Emma Louise Young took issue with what she saw as a misplaced use of public money.

She commented: "Looks horrendous. You're making a mockery of an historic building why can't you leave things alone. All that money you're wasting that could be used on something useful that Leeds actually needs."

Jonny Linthwaite said: "Garish and not exactly colours associated with Leeds and Yorkshire."

Vivien Stephenson thought it looked "like an entrance to a theme park".

Jan Baxter II worried that the design could soon age.

She said: "With so many really beautiful fittings and ornamentation inside the market it would have been great to see a sympathetic design. Or one that spoke of Leeds (owls, anyone?) or Kirkgate. This design, like some of the worst excesses of the 60s & 70s, will age FAST."

But not everyone was put off by the colourful design.

Brandon Michio Benson said it should go ahead.

He said: "I like it, I mean people moaning about how it looks, but guys, look at the rest of Leeds now, John Lewis, Trinity, I say let them do it."

Kath Clough said: "I quite like it!"

Emma Gargett was also a fan. She commented: "I love it.. it's like art."

Craig Chadwick said: "Great ideas but don’t like the colours."

Sheffield artist Rob Lee won a competition to give the market an overhaul and will use his specialist techniques to paint directly onto the corrugated steel panels.

Although the structure of the building will remain exactly the same, his clever painting techniques will give it the illusion of a 3D effect.
