Social media reacts as James McClean sees red for Ireland in Wales stalemate

James McClean's red card was one of the few talking points on the pitch as Ireland and Wales played out a stalemate at the Aviva today.

The positive Covid-19 cases within the Irish camp, coupled with the misery of losing a Euro 2020 playoff on penalties, meant that was not much appetite for the Nations League match.

And it largely lived up to its billing as both sides cancelled each other out in the behind closed doors clash in Dublin.

James McClean was his usual industrious self but two quickfire fouls from the Derryman proved the big talking point.

First the winger was shown yellow for clipping Connor Roberts boot in a race for the ball.

And then the referee reached for another yellow and a red when McClean was adjudged to have fouled Wales' Ethan Ampadu when both players were stretching for the ball.

The second yellow looked particularly harsh on McClean as contact seemed to be minimal on the Welsh player. And Ireland fans were left scratching their heads at the decision:
