Social media reacts as Ireland suffer shock 1-0 defeat to Luxembourg

Ireland's bid to reach World Cup 2022 is already in tatters after the boys in green suffered a shock 0-1 defeat to Luxembourg at the Aviva Stadium.

The defeat means that Stephen Kenny is still searching for his first win as Ireland manager after the boys in green lost to the side ranked 98th in the world.

After the 3-2 defeat in Serbia, Ireland now have a massive job on their hands if they're to secure a top-two place in the group with qualification to Qatar already slipping away,

In terms of the big selection decision, Kenny opted to give Gavin Bazunu his senior debut in place of the beleaguered Mark Travers.

Elsewhere, James Collins replaced Aaron Connolly while Jason Knight started in midfield.

In terms of chances, Ireland's best effort came early in the first half when Enda Stevens found himself in loads of space before he picked out Callum Robinson out wide.

His ball into the box fell at the feet of James Collins, but his effort was saved brilliantly by Moris in the Luxembourg goal.

In terms of attacking threats, the visitors forced Bazunu into a string of fine saves with Olivier Thill and Vincent Thill both denied.

The visitors almost took the lead when Gerson Rodrigues' long-range effort nearly crept in but in the second half, Ireland almost took the lead when substitute Robbie Brady picked out James Collins, who went close with an overhead kick.

However, Dynamo Kyiv attacker Rodrigues wouldn't be denied and he gave the visitors a deserved lead after his superb low drive flew past a helpless Bazunu into the bottom corner.

All in all, just like Macedonia and Lichenstein all those years ago, tonight was a horrific night for Irish supporters.

"Embarrassing. Awful. Out worked, outfought, out passed & outclassed by LUXEMBOURG. Another WC without qualification" is how Kevin Kilbane put it.

"There are teams you can’t lose to. Luxembourg are one of them," "the bad news is that Luxembourg thoroughly deserves this win," "Rodrigues looks levels above anything Ireland have" and "If Ireland were going to boycott the Qatar World Cup, you'd think they'd have told people first..." were some of the comments made by dejected Irish fans.

"This is woeful," "this is an absolute shocker," "a brutal second half" and "The lack of urgency is scarcely believable" were just some of the other comments made on a terrible night for Irish football.

"There's just no glossing over that. One of the worst Irish results in a generation and the poorest performance of the Kenny era" and "one of worst results in our history" are perfectly fair comments.

We'll let George Hamilton sum things up when he said: "The sky over Dublin 4 weeps tears of pain”
