Social media reacts after Gerry Ryan's show The Ryan Line returns to RTE 2FM for one-off special

Listeners were left stunned after tuning in to 2FM this morning to hear the voice of legendary presenter Gerry Ryan.

The station brought back the Ryan Line one last time as a tribute to the late broadcaster, who passed away in 2010.

Gerry's oldest daughter Lottie introduced the show and for the next hour listeners heard clips spliced together from the archives of his lengthy radio career.

And the show provoked a huge reaction on social media, with tributes pouring in for the radio legend, nine years after his tragic death.

One listener wrote: "I don't know what sorcery @RTE2fm used but #TheRyanLineIsOpen and it is fantastic.

"Gerry Ryan has already referenced creaming himself, poppers and gay clubs.

"I think he was a key part of the liberalisation of Irish society."

Meanwhile fellow RTE journalist Phillip Boucher-Hayes said he was "barely holding it together" listening to the one-off special.

And legendary GAA presenter Marty Morrisey was another who added to the tributes, saying: "Wow..that was the most wonderful hour of Radio on 2FM.

"The Ryan Line was open for an hour and proved yet again what a fantastic broadcaster the late Gerry Ryan was. I couldn’t do a thing for the last hour! Loved it.

"Thank you Will Leahy & JJ Hartigan, 2FM and Ryan family."
