Social media explodes over penalty shootout howler at Solitude

It could only happen in the Irish League.

Crusaders are nursing more penalty shootout heartache, and this time they have every right to feel aggrieved.

Stephen Baxter's side were knocked out of the Europa Conference League playoffs in controversial circumstances.

The game went to a penalty shootout after finishing scoreless following 120 minutes of derby action at Solitude.

The first nine penalties were all scored as the tension ramped up.

The 10th spotkick was taken by Michael Ruddy, but the Crusaders midfielder hammered his effort off the underside of the crossbar.

The ball bounced down and away from the goal, with the match officials determining the ball did not cross the line.

But television replays showed Ruddy's shot DID land inside the net and should have been marked as a goal.

Two weeks ago Crusaders lodged a protest after their Irish Cup penalty shootout with Larne ended in controversial fashion.

That protest was dismissed by the IFA, and now they are having to deal with more spot-kick misery.

And they have plenty of support this time.

Former Crusaders defender Howard Beverland tweeted: "Complete injustice tonight. Players, management and fans don’t deserve that. Too much at stake! Clear to see by twitter and social media there is wide spread agreement & a wave of support for fairness and justice to be restored. Hopefully something can be done to put this right"

BBC presenter and commentator Joel Taggart said: "That is absolutely shocking from the Assistant referee. How can he not see that the ball is over the line from the position he is in."

Northern Ireland international and former Crusaders winger Stuart Dallas replied: "Embarrassing, worrying thing is the decisions are getting worse. Bring him out and make him do an interview to explain how he hasn’t seen that."

Trevor said: "Why in a shoot out is there only one assistant at the side line by the net. Would it not help to have another?"

Michael tweeted: "Are you shocked? Happens every week in the irish league..."

Crusaders goalkeeper Sean O'Neill, who didn't feature in the game, simply said: "Madness!".

Glentoran midfielder Ciaran O'Connor tweeted: "It just keeps getting worse every time I watch it. Oh my days!"

Fellow Glens player Seanan Clucas added: "Officials should be interviewed after decisions like that. That’s a shambles."
