Social media crack down for councillors amid Labour's civil war

Councillors are being warned about their behaviour on social media after some members have been airing their grievances online.

It follows a dramatic week that has revealed deep divisions within the Labour Group, with rows between party members exploding onto social media.

Elected members have been advised to think before "hastily firing off a blog post or tweet" and to not "get bogged down" taking on trolls, in a document guiding them on how to use social media.

Liverpool City Councillors are no strangers to scrapping on twitter and have been forced to remove explosive tweets about each other in the past.

But in a  list of  social media "dos and dont's",  they have been asked to "avoid personal attacks" or behaving in a way that could bring the council into "disrepute."

Other advice includes not to delete comments that are critical of the council and to have separate personal and professional Facebook accounts.

Mayor Anderson   has set aside £30k to support an elected members training programme  which will include training and briefing sessions on social media, according to a  report presented to the Constitutional Issues Committee on Thursday.

Emails and tweets have been going back and forth between councillors after the group's deputy leader, Cllr Ann O'Byrne tabled a motion to remove Joe Anderson's Mayoral title.

The motion - listed for the group's Annual General Meeting on May 13 - will call for the council to return to a leader and cabinet structure instead of the Mayoral model that has been in place since 2012.

Cllr O'Byrne confirmed that if that move happens, she will run for leader - in a direct challenge to Mayor Anderson's nine-year reign at the head of the party and council.

But Mayor Anderson hit back strongly , labelling his former Deputy Mayor as 'ignorant.'

Councillors have lined up to take sides following the move, as a chain of shocking emails leaked to the ECHO revealed.

Others chose to make their views known publicly on social media.

After election night, cabinet member James Noakes said on Facebook: "Imagine the polls closing and you then launch your leadership bid. Forget the hard working members and candidates. Just focus on you.

"I've kept my gob shut for a while cos I don't think it needed my tuppence worth and I have tried to see things from all sides amongst the crap but that is just disgraceful.

"There are good cllrs awaiting their fate tonight. To be treated like that is shameless. Awful.

Cllr Joanne Kushner also tweeted her support for Mayor Anderson, who she said exposed Cllr O'Byrne's "untruths".

Despite the criticisms, it is claimed that Cllr O'Byrne already has as many as 40 councillors on board with her plan - and that is before you include new councillors elected last night, many of whom are expected to back her.
