Social media can be used as a platform which opens a window on the worst of humanity

Kiara Buonomo has months to live and needs all the love and support she can get.

But she and her family are being targeted in a disgusting social media bullying campaign.

The horrifying messages are grossly offensive and are clearly causing considerable pain.

Kiara’s mum has finally complained to police after suffering an intolerable number of hateful messages.

It’s almost unthinkable that someone could be so malicious about a dying girl.

But once again it shows how social media can be used as a platform which opens a window on the worst of humanity.

Fund launched in memory of tragic teen footballer killed in horror gap year crash

In years gone by, these sad individuals with their bitter hatreds would be of little consequence.

Social media, however, gives these nobodies a platform – and the wicked troll gets the same access as the sensible commentator, the funny tweeter and the everyday Facebooker.

If we disagree with someone, there’s no need to abuse them. But those that make a fortune from social media also need to act so that those who peddle hate can be tracked down and prosecuted.

Police are hunting the sick troll who is abusing Kiara now. Hopefully they can put a stop to it quickly and give the family the peace they clearly need.

Postcode peril

Cancer fighter who lost limb to disease now fighting for bionic arm to become chef

Being told you have a life-threatening illness must be just about the worst news you can hear.

Learning that your treatment for that illness has been less than satisfactory must also be absolutely sickening for patients and their families.

Yet that is what has happened in the NHS Tayside area, where the Scottish Government has stepped in to order urgent improvements to breast cancer treatment.

A report found patients were routinely given lower doses of chemotherapy drugs than in other parts of the country.

To compound matters, patients were not told that their treatment differed markedly simply due to where they live.

The Scottish Government has ordered changes to breast cancer treatment in Tayside with “immediate effect”.

That is to be welcomed. Cancer treatment should be the best on offer – not subject to a postcode lottery.

Stick around

A little piece of Scottish heritage is being kept going by dedicated craftsmen.

John and Christopher Blair are among the last to make shinty camans by hand.

Now on the “critically endangered” list, it’s a reminder that skills need to be cherished and passed on.
