Social homes planned as Mansfield council looks to demolish disused community centres

A disused community hall on a Nottinghamshire estate is set to be demolished as part of council plans to introduce social housing.

Mansfield District Council has submitted a planning application to knock down the building in Saundby Avenue, on the Ladybrook estate.

It comes as part of wider council plans to bring new life into small community buildings across the district, with many of the 25 council-run meeting rooms "under-used".

As part of the plans, the authority will demolish the disused community building in Saundby Avenue to make way for four two-bedroom social homes.

The Ladybrook building is one of 10 sites across the district that have been earmarked for similar proposals.

A council statement said: "Mansfield District Council manages a portfolio of around 6,500 homes plus 25 small community centres (or Tenant Meeting Rooms as they are sometimes known).

"Many of these TMR’s are underused and cost the council a substantial sum in business rates and maintenance etc.

"Ten of these buildings have been identified as being uneconomic to retain and that the best way forward would be to demolish them and redevelop the sites to provide much needed social housing.

"Saundby Avenue Community Centre on the Ladybrook Estate is one such site and is the subject of this application.

"Consideration was given to retaining the existing building and converting it, but in this case better use can be made of the site by demolishing it.

"The site is to be re-developed to provide four two-bedroom homes for social housing use. Off road parking for four cars will be provided."

Planning documents submitted by the council add that the new social houses will be carbon neutral, will have "reduced running costs" and omit "hardly any greenhouse gas emissions".

The plans at Ladybrook, submitted by the council this month, will be reviewed by planners in the new year.
