Social entrepreneurs discuss the riots of summer 2011 that shocked Britain

The week beginning 7 August 2011 saw riots and disorder on our streets. It also saw an exceptional response by social entrepreneurs and citizens, coming together to offer ways to help solve the underlying problems.

UnLtd, the foundation for social entrepreneurs, works with many of the people – often from the communities and age groups most involved – who have a deep and personal understanding of the situation.  UnLtd undertook a survey among its award winners about the riots and discovered many had either pro-actively worked with community members on a preventive basis or were doing something to help their communities recover.

The foundation held a private roundtable on Tuesday 13 September with some of these pro-active individuals, alongside key policymakers and supporters to hear, first hand, how people leading social and community ventures in the most disadvantaged areas contribute to building stronger, more cohesive communities. The roundtable also provided an opportunity to discuss potential solutions with those working at the grassroots.

The audio above is a reflection of three award winners: Pearl Amoateng of Let's Be Positive, Liz Douglas of The Roots Project and Sebastian Thiel of Its Upshot. Cliff Prior, UnLtd CEO concludes.
