Summary

Contraception Education was registered as a company limited by shares in 2001 to protect the IPR and act as a vehicle to distribute Contraception the Board Game, a product developed by Barbara Hastings-Asatourian. In 2009 it was re-registered with Companies House as a CIC and now operates with the values of a social enterprise, reinvesting and donating profit to worthy causes.

Turnover is now largely raised through the sale of resources in the new one stop store. This is how we fund our social enterprise. It enables us to pay wages and operate our training activities without external funding, which is liberating and really satisfying.

Barbara now spends a large percentage of her time talking to groups of people in many different settings and also advising people on the telephone on a one to one basis about health in general, and sexual health in particular.

Mission

To provide relationship education, promote safe sex and prevent both unintended pregnancies and the spreading of sexually transmitted infections.

Location

Derbyshire, UK

Key Personnel

Barbara Hastings-Asatourian, founder and managing director

Barbara is a nurse, midwife and health visitor. She taught nurses in university for 18 years before retiring in 2010 to devote all of her time to her two social enterprises – one of these is being Contraception Education CIC. The other, Manchester Diamonds Cheerleading CIC, provides athletic and dancing team building activities and competition skills for young people in Manchester. She also volunteers for young people's organisations such as the Prince's Trust.

Khachik Asatourian, director

Khachik's expertise in business and finance management has been captured in the development of a robust financial management strategy for Contraception Education Limited. His previous experience includes establishing Glosupplies Limited in 1993, which supplies computer consumables and stationery to order.

Julie Wray, director

Julie, recently appointed by the University of Salford as non-executive director of Contraception Education Limited, has practised across a range of health care settings in England and USA. For 16 years Julie worked as a midwife working closely with young people in the community.
