“Social distancing? That’ll do no good” - What Gogglebox stars' first impressions of Covid were

Season 15 of Channel 4’s Gogglebox documents the stars’ reaction to the moment coronavirus came to the UK, and it’s pretty strange to watch.

The show - which is set to return to our screens next Friday, February 26 for its 16th series - sees families and friends from across the country commentate on the best of the week’s TV.

And episode three of season 15, which aired just a week before the UK went into lockdown for the first time, sees the stars watch a snippet of a BBC News programme presented by Reeta Chakrabarti.

The snippet started with the BBC News presenter announcing that a British man had died from coronavirus after he quarantined on the Princess cruise ship.

The show then cut to Bristol’s own Marina, who said to her best friend Mary: “How do we stop it?” to which Mary replied: “I don’t know, sounds terrible dun’t it, I’m worried to death about my grandson in Thailand.”

We then see best friends from Durham Abbie and Georgia talk about getting prepared for the virus.

“They’ve run out of hand sanitizer in the shops y’know, so I’ve stocked up,” Abby said.

“I’ve just ordered some on eBay, I couldn’t get any anywhere,” Georgia replied.

“I think I’m gonna start wearing a mask now as well.”

“I’m getting a mask for when I go to New York on that aeroplane, and a body bag.”

The show then cut to the Prime Minister who stressed that the most important thing we can do is ‘wash our hands,’ to which Essex-born Linda replied: “We do know that Boris we’re not that stupid!”

The BBC’s Medical Correspondent Fergus Walsh gave viewers an explainer as to how people can wash their hands properly, and also introduced a term that hadn’t been heard before - ‘social distancing.’

This came as a shock to The Worthingtons, who laughed: “Social distancing? That’ll do no good.”

“I already know the vaccine to this,” Sophie Sandiford said to her brother Pete, “and it’s called a chill pill.

“Everyone needs to chill out, it’ll be fine.

“I’m not worrying and you watch, I’ll be the one that gets it!”
