
The Diet, which had paused its session in response to the government's declaration of a state of emergency, reopened deliberations Friday, after measures had been strengthened to prevent infections with the new coronavirus. In the chamber of the House of Councillors, members took their seats while leaving an open gap of one empty seat between each member and their neighbor. Due to a number of seats not having equipment that allows votes to be cast with the push of a button, votes were cast by having assembly members stand instead.
