Social distancing could stay 'for the foreseeable future', UK scientists warn

Social distancing measures could stay in place for the foreseeable future despite the vaccine roll-out, UK Government scientists have warned.

The 'one-metre' rule, which was introduced in June, could be enforced for months in a move that would hit hit shops, pubs and cinemas.

Government scientists are reportedly gearing up for a "killer argument" over how long to keep social distancing and are keen to keep strict rules in place, Sky News reports.

It has previously been suggested that face masks and social distancing may still be needed throughout 2021, even after all other lockdown measures have been lifted.

A government source told Sky News: "This is the killer argument and no decision has been made.

"A lot rests on it for some businesses - the difference between being viable and not."

Some have sounded caution as even after all adults have been offered a vaccine, there will be some people that will not have had the jab.

New variants could emerge later in the year that are more resistant to vaccines, while it is also still unclear how long people are protected against Covid by the jabs.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon is set to review Scotland's latest lockdown restrictions on Tuesday, with details on the phased return of schools to be confirmed.

Scotland has endured seven gruelling weeks of lockdown since Christmas with non-essential shops shut, almost all hospitality businesses closed and a ban on travelling outwith local council areas.

Millions will be hoping she can also provide some detail on when the toughest lockdown restrictions can expect to be eased.

The number of positive covid test results has been falling across the country in recent weeks, with the number of coronavirus patients in hospital also dropping.
