Social and affordable housing could be set for 'eyesore' former pub site

The site of a former pub in Kirkby in Ashfield which has been empty since a huge fire could be turned into social and affordable homes under new council plans.

The land, at the junction of Minster Close and Southwell Lane, was once home to the Wild Orchid Pub which was demolished in the mid 2000s following a fire in the late 1980s.

It has remained empty ever since, with residents saying that it had become an "unsightly" spot which encouraged vermin.

However, under the new plans, it could become the site for 12 homes after plans were submitted to Ashfield District Council by Pelham Architects.

The plans, supported by the leader of the council, propose converting the now-empty site into the social and affordable properties in a bid to "enhance the area".

If approved it would bring seven social rental homes and five affordable homes to the site, with a mixture of two and three-bedroom properties.

Planning permission had previously been sought to build a nursing home on the land, but these plans never came to fruition.

The 12 homes have been welcomed by a resident who commented on the council's planning portal.

Maxine Morrell, who lives on nearby Minster Close, said: "I and the other members of my household welcome this planning application as the plot of land has become very unsightly and a dumping ground encouraging vermin.

"The area had become so overgrown that you couldn’t walk on the paths. New housing to help people get on the property ladder would be excellent."

Councillor Jason Zadrozny, leader of Ashfield District Council, has also welcomed the plans.

He said: “For as long as I have been on this council – the land where the Wild Orchid pub stood has been abandoned.

"Residents have been quite rightly frustrated at this overgrown mess. It was a magnet for dumping and antisocial behaviour.

"When I stood for election, I promised residents that I would do my best to get this site developed and I am delighted that an application has now been lodged.

"I am fully supportive having worked tirelessly with the landowners. The 12 houses on the site will really enhance the area.

"I have spoken to a number of residents on Minster Close and Southwell Lane.

"They are delighted that we will see an end to this eyesore that has been a blight on the community for far too long.”

The proposals will be discussed by Ashfield District Council's planning committee at a later date.
