Socceroo Bos-ses Mourinho's men in European debut

Former Melbourne City defender Jordan Bos has had a competitive Feyenoord debut and first UEFA Champions League night never to forget in the Netherlands.

Having earlier received a yellow card and shot at goal saved at De Kuip Stadium, the Socceroos left wingback set up his side's late winning goal with a wonderful cross to sink Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce 2-1 in the first leg of their third qualifying-round tie.

"Good start but we keep going. Thank you for the atmosphere!," the 22-year-old boyhood Feyenoord fan posted on Instagram.

Bos, who only joined the 16-time Dutch champions last month on a four-year deal after two seasons in Belgium with Westerlo, found the head of Anis Hadj Moussa with a long diagonal ball as it ticked over to added time in Rotterdam on Wednesday night (Thursday AEST).

It sent his coach, legend of club and country, Robin van Persie and the 52,000 home fans wild ahead of next week's return game in Turkey.

The winner of the tie will face either two-time European champions Benfica from Portugal or French club Nice for a spot in the lucrative group stage.

"We played very well in the first half," van Persie, who played two-and-a-half years with the Istanbul giants, said.

"We deserved to score more than one goal. My players came out with great energy. We expected that energy in the second half, but it dipped.

"We played against a very good opponent ... but we still held on. We had some opportunities, and in the end, we scored a wonderful goal."

Dutch international midfielder Quinten Timber had opened the scoring for the hosts, who made the round of 16 last season, on 19 minutes before Moroccan Soyfan Amrabat equalised in the 86th.

Elsewhere, another of Tony Popovic's European-based Socceroos in Daniel Arzani didn't feature in Ferencvaros' 0-0 draw in Bulgaria against Ludogorets.

Benfica, 1991 winners Crvena zvezda, Club Brugge and Kairat Almaty also enjoyed first-leg victories.
