LONDON (Reuters) - Wolverhampton Wanderers got their promotion push back on track with a 3-0 victory over lowly Reading at Molineux to stay three points clear at the top of the Championship on Tuesday.

Cardiff City won 3-1 at Brentford to keep pace in the second automatic promotion spot and are seven points above third-placed Aston Villa who lost by that score to Queens Park Rangers.

Wolves fullback Matt Doherty took advantage of sloppy defending to put his side ahead before he struck again late on after a goal from Benik Afobe to wrap up the points.

Nuno Espirito Santo's Wolves team had won just once in their previous five league games heading into the rearranged match against Reading, including a 4-1 thrashing at Villa on Saturday.

Cardiff recovered to beat Brentford as Sol Bamba and Callum Paterson gave them a halftime lead after Neal Maupay had opened the scoring before Kenneth Zohore made it 3-1 on the hour.

Villa trailed to an early Ryan Manning header before Jake Bidwell made it 2-0 and substitute Luke Freeman struck a late third for the visitors before James Chester got a consolation.
