Soccer fans trash commentator who blamed Angel Di Maria’s red card on ‘Latino temperament’

Last year, former Cincinnati Reds and Fox broadcaster Thom Brennaman lost his job when he used a homophobic slur caught on a hot mic. Well, some announcers are still saying terrible things on the air.

On Tuesday, racist rhetoric found its way into CBS Sports’ broadcast of the UEFA Champions League semifinal second leg between PSG and Manchester City.

In the 69th minute with City up 2-0, Angel Di Maria was sent off after he kicked at the leg of Fernandinho on the sidelines. Di Maria’s foul was out of frustration amid a poor showing in the semifinal, but for commentator Jim Beglin, it was inexplicably a result of Di Maria’s Argentinian heritage.

Beglin, watching the replay of the foul, said, “It’s that Latino temperament.”

Beglin’s stereotypical and prejudiced remark was noticed by plenty of viewers, and they proceeded to rip the CBS announcer on Twitter — and justifiably so. Beglin apologized on the broadcast, but it didn’t stop the strong response.
